New York Bicycle Accident Claims Life of Bronx Man

Even as New York City embraces Vision Zero policies designed to eliminate all traffic fatalities within City limits, the number of pedestrians and cyclists killed by automobiles in New York continues to climb. We see more bike lanes, slower speed limits, more educational material, and even re-timed stop lights but is any of that actually doing what it was designed to do? Just last week a tragic bicycle accident in New York City claimed the life of a Bronx man. The individual, 59-year old commuter, was struck by a sedan while riding near the I-87 on ramp in Yonkers.

The accident happened around 11 PM and rescue crews arrived within minutes. However, the unnamed victim was declared dead at the scene. NYPD investigated the crash and questioned the driver of the sedan (who had remained at the scene) but released him without filing any charges. Some have speculated that the bicyclist was not wearing reflective clothing or using proper bicycle lighting. However, that alone does not prove that the victim was responsible for this accident.

New York City has time and time again been voted the most dangerous city in the United States for pedestrians and bicyclists. While the City does much to promote alternative travel methods and protect bicyclists, that protection is insufficient when it comes to a careless or negligent automobile driver.

The most common bicycle collisions in the City are caused by drivers who fail to yield to cyclists and those who engage in improper turns, cutting off cyclists in the bike lane. In addition, speeding is the number one contributing factor in these types of bicycle accident in New York. Not surprising, statistics show that in bicycle and pedestrian accidents nationwide, the driver of the automobile is responsible roughly 60% of the time.
