Falling Ice Accident in Manhattan Leaves Man with Head Trauma

This winter's abnormal weather has created a variety of hazards for New Yorkers to deal including ice falling from skyscrapers and multi-story buildings. The recent snow storm combined with the temperature fluctuations created the perfect conditions to create ice buildup on the rooves and facades of buildings in New York. And that buildup can be deadly. One man is counting his blessings this week after suffering minor head trauma in a falling ice accident in Manhattan.

On March 15th the victim was walking along the sidewalk near West 48th street and Fifth Avenue when a large chunk detached from the building housing the Plaza Arcade. The ice broke free, shattered a letter in the sign on the front of the building, then continued down to strike the man in the head. He was rushed to a nearby hospital with relatively minor injuries. Responding firefighters took time to remove the remaining ice from the building's facade and the sidewalk in front of the building was blocked off.

Strangely enough, this is almost the exact same spot where another pedestrian was struck by falling ice in 2014.

In New York City, building owners have a duty to monitor ice buildup and remove any hazards on high or block off the sidewalk below so pedestrians aren't in the danger zone. If they fail to do so and somebody is seriously hurt by chunks of falling ice, the building owner could be held financially liable for the victim's injuries.

The injuries sustained in a falling ice accident in Manhattan can be very serious. Add to that time off from work and the medical expenses, the financial loss could be devastating.

If you've been injured by ice or other debris knocked off the facade of a building, contact a New York City falling ice accident attorney today.
