Garbage Truck Causes Fatal Bicycle Accident in New York City

Police are scrambling to locate a driver after a bicyclist was killed in a hit-and-run accident involving a garbage truck earlier this week. The 27-year-old victim, identified as Neftaly Ramirez, was struck by a garbage truck near the intersection of Noble Street as he rode his bike down Franklin Street in Brooklyn. Investigators tracking this latest fatal bicycle accident in Brooklyn are considering the possibility that the driver didn’t even know he had struck the bicyclist.

Being overlooked is a very real danger for both bicyclists and pedestrians on New York City Streets. In a significant percentage of collisions involving motor vehicles-especially large commercial trucks and buses-drivers report not noticing the injured party. Often eyewitnesses to the crash are the ones to alert the vehicle operators-sometimes chasing them down the street and yelling at them to stop.

Unfortunately for the victim’s family, there were no eyewitnesses to this tragic bicycle accident in New York City. The only information available is that the privately owned sanitation truck was green with yellow lettering. Police are combing through hours of surveillance footage from security cameras culled from local businesses and relying on the public to come forward if they have any information.

If the NYPD can identify the vehicle or the driver, that individual and/or the company they work for could be held criminally and financially liable for the victim’s death. In such cases the surviving family members can sue for pain and suffering for the time the victim survived after the accident, medical and funeral expenses in addition to lost financial support for dependents.

If you’ve been injured or have lost a loved one because of the careless actions of a inattentive driver, contact an experienced New York City bicycle accident lawyer immediately.
