Two Separate Elevator Accidents in New York City injure 5 People

On Behalf of | Aug 3, 2017 | Elevator Accidents

Several individuals were injured in elevator accidents in New York City over the past several weeks. The two separate incidents occurred in the Bronx and Manhattan, resulting in a total of five injuries between them.

The first incident involved a crew of Con Ed workers at a company facility in Vinegar Hill. The victims were riding in a car when it suddenly dropped nearly 200 feet straight down and crashed to the bottom of an underground shaft. FDNY rescue crews arrived but it took them hours to pry the victims from the mangled car. All of the workers were taken to a single hospital suffering from a variety of serious injuries.

The second elevator accident in Manhattan ended with a repairman crushed beneath an elevator car. The individual was working on a lift in a building on Lafayette Street when something went wrong and the car smashed down on top of him. FDNY firefighters struggled for almost an hour to free the man pinned under the wreckage and were eventually able to pull him from the building’s basement.

No doubt both accident investigations will be focusing on the safety measures installed on these particular elevators. Such precautions are designed to stop these types of New York City elevator accidents by preventing cars from dropping suddenly. Braking systems and other safeguards are required by law to be inspected regularly and repaired in a timely fashion. However, many similar elevator accidents are caused because these safety measures are either inoperative or have malfunctioned in some way creating potentially deadly situations.
