6 Construction Workers Injured When Roof Collapses in Brooklyn

On Behalf of | Nov 27, 2017 | Construction Accidents

A construction accident in Brooklyn left six workers injured earlier this month. The men were working inside a vacant building which was undergoing extensive renovation when the roof of the apartment collapsed. The roof was fully loaded with cinder blocks and other building materials at the time it caved in. The weight of the debris came crashing down, smashing through every floor of the three-story building until finally coming to a stop in the basement. The collapse of cement, wood, and metal turned the interior of the apartment into a giant sinkhole.

All of the workers were inside the building at the time of the collapse. It’s unclear how far each of the men fell but at least four of them managed to scramble out of the wreckage under their own power.

The six construction workers injured in this construction accident in New York City suffered a variety of injuries. But two of the men were trapped inside the rubble and debris until NYFD rescue crews arrived on scene and were able to cut them out.

An investigation into the cause of this near-fatal construction accident in Brooklyn revealed that the building involved had been deemed uninhabitable in 2009 because of widespread water damage throughout the building. Supervisors at the jobsite should have questioned whether or not the roof was strong enough to support the added weight of the cinder blocks and other building materials before ever having transported the load up three stories. A stop work order has been issued while the DOB and OSHA investigate.

The injured construction workers can invoke on their behalf violations of the New York Labor Law which hold property owners and general contractors absolutely responsible for accidents such as these. The workers are entitled to compensation for their injuries, unpaid medical bills and lost wages, present and future.
