Truck Accident in Residential Neighborhood Highlights Danger of Mobile Cranes

On Behalf of | Nov 19, 2017 | Truck Accidents

A scary truck accident in a single family home’s driveway last month shined a light on just how dangerous mobile truck-based booms can be especially when in the hands of inexperienced operators. Usually crane accidents in NYC involve lost loads or toppling booms at construction sites. However, there are thousands of smaller, truck-based cranes in the city that are used to deliver construction materials, reach rooves of smaller homes, or de-limb trees. Truck accidents in New York City involving these small cranes are rare but can be devastating.

That’s a reality that residents at a home in West Orange New Jersey had to deal with last month when a truck-based crane toppled onto its side in their driveway. The operator was injured, trapped inside when the crane fell, and the cab of the truck crashed through a garage. The truck accident also ripped down several power lines that supplied homes in the area.

Because these truck cranes are much smaller and built onto a flatbed, they utilize a series of retractable stabilizers to insure they don’t tip when the boom is extended. If those stabilizers aren’t fully extended, if the crane is not level at the time of the lift, or if the pads of those supports are placed on soft ground or unstable material, the entire crane can tip in an instant.

If you’ve been injured in a truck accident in New York because the operator of a mobile crane failed to properly support his vehicle, you may be able to seek compensation for injuries, lost wages, and more from the company which owns the crane and the operator.
