DOT’s New Marketing Campaign Designed to Prevent Crosswalk Accidents in New York City

On Behalf of | Nov 27, 2018 | Pedestrian Accidents

Crosswalk accidents in New York City are one of the most common types of pedestrian accident anywhere in The Big Apple. In fact, they make up the majority of pedestrian involved collisions here and are responsible for the vast majority of serious injuries and fatalities that people on foot suffer. As New York City traffic laws are now written, every crosswalk accident could be considered a crime. Motorists have the responsibility to stop for pedestrians in crosswalks every time-whether the crosswalk is marked or not.

A new campaign by NYC DOT is aimed at raising public awareness of the danger pedestrians face in crosswalks and reducing the number of collisions that we see on our streets. As part of the Vision Zero plan, the DOT has created the new “Signs” public outreach campaign consisting of print, digital, and video advertisements highlighting several of the most common-and most dangerous types of accidents in the city.

The focus of this new crosswalk campaign is twofold:

· To get drivers to slow down

· To get drivers to yield to pedestrians

The focus was placed on these two behaviors because they are the top contributing factors to potentially lethal crosswalk accidents in New York. Indeed, failure to yield is the most common citation levied against drivers who strike pedestrians. Speed is not only one of the top contributing factors to these types of accidents, it also dramatically increases the risk of victims suffering a serious life-threatening injury.

By reminding drivers of their legal responsibility to watch out for pedestrians, the DOT hopes that it can decrease the number of crosswalk accidents in New York.

If you or a loved one has been injured while crossing the street in the crosswalk on a green light, you are entitled to compensation for your injuries, lost time from work and medical expenses.
