New York City Playground Accidents on the Rise

According to official data from the comptroller's office, the number of playground accidents in New York is on the rise. With the summer months here, New York City playgrounds provide a readily available option for some fun in the sun, exercise, and family bonding time. However, some of the City playgrounds can prove dangerous for children.

New York City School Bus Accident Sends Nine to the Hospital

We put our children on school buses every day and expect them to make it to their destinations safely but that's not always the case. A terrifying New York City school bus accident involving a taxi cab sent nine people to the hospital with undisclosed injuries. On March 11th, a Brooklyn bus carrying 6 school children (all under the age of 12) flipped over after a taxi cab struck the front of the bus at a busy Bedford-Stuyvesant intersection. All of the students were taken to an area hospital for observation while the bus driver and matron were hospitalized for undisclosed injuries.

Playground Accidents Can have Long Term Consequences

New York City's playgrounds are supposed to be places where children can run and play without worry. However, research from the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons shows that playgrounds are one of the most dangerous places for our children. Each year over 156,000 children under the age of 14 visit emergency rooms across the United States suffering injuries they received on public and private playgrounds. Many of these injuries are caused by defective or unsafe playground equipment, poor repair of the surrounding area, or failure of adult supervisors (such as school teachers and playground monitors) to properly safeguard our children.

Did Teacher of Burned Chemistry Student Ignore Federal Warning?

Earlier this month, a tragic school accident in a New York chemistry class left a young student with disfiguring burns to his face and torso. Investigators are still trying to get to the bottom of a terrible accident at the award-winning Beacon High School on New York's Upper West Side. The accident occurred in the school's chemistry class during what's commonly known as "the Rainbow Experiment." During the exhibition, the teacher use methanol as an accelerant to burn various chemicals producing a rainbow-like effect. Unfortunately, the experiment got out of hand and Alonzo Yanes, a sixteen-year old student (one of 30 in the classroom at the time) was severely burned. Another student's clothing caught fire as did portions of her hair but she escaped serious injury.

Playground Injuries: The Hidden Danger

Every year in the United States playground accidents account for over 200,000 injuries involving children 14-years old or younger. And while any parent knows that a rambunctious child can suffer their fair share of scrapes and bruises, many of these playground injuries were severe enough to warrant trips to the ER. Indeed, some of the most common injuries suffered by these children are broken bones which take weeks and months to heal properly.

Daycare Center Accidents - Accident or Neglect?

As a parent, you take great care to choose a daycare center that will keep your child safe. But even a thorough screening and review of a daycare's credentials cannot guarantee that the staff will perform their duties diligently at all times. And when daycare centers are negligent, the results can be heartbreaking.
