Pedestrian Killed By Motorcycle While Crossing the Street

In a bizarre motorcycle accident early Sunday morning (8/11/13), a 50-year old pedestrian was killed while cross the street in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Queens. The accident occurred at roughly 4 in the morning when the man attempted to cross Queens Boulevard, apparently against the traffic light. A 33-year old on a Suzuki motorbike struck and killed the man instantly. The rider was flung from the bike and suffered severe injuries. He was later taken to Elmhurst Hospital and classified in critical condition.

Motorbike accidents aren't uncommon in New York City. In 2011, DMV statistics show that there were over 5,000 motorcycle accidents in New York State, 1,200 in New York City itself. 168 of them resulted in fatalities (usually the driver of the bike). That number includes the 34 fatal New York City motorcycle accidents. Unfortunately, these statistics fall in line with national averages. Indeed, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data show that you're 34 times more likely to die while riding a motorcycle than you are when driving an automobile.

However, this Queens motorcycle accident was something of a fluke. Researchers with the New York Motorcycle and Scooter Task Force (NYMSTF), an all-volunteer organization dedicated to improving safety, awareness, and education for motorcycle and scooter riders, could only find two previous examples in each of the past two years in which a motorcyclists struck and killed a pedestrian. In all of the previous cases, the pedestrian was trying to cross the street against the light.

Regardless of the circumstances surrounding the incident, two lives were irreparably damaged early Sunday morning. While one family is grieving the loss of a loved one, another is praying for the wellbeing of another.

In time of crisis money is often the last thought on anyone's mind but tragic accidents such as this rip holes in lives that take time to heal. Financial loss is just one natural aspect of the fallout of such tragedies. And, unlike emotional and physical damage, financial damage can sometimes be easily repaired with the help of an experienced motorcycle accident attorney. If an individual or legal entity is found responsible-even partially-for the accident, the victim may have the right to seek reimbursement from the guilty party-but only if they act fast.
