Long Island Train Accident Results in "Minor" Derailment

A train on the LIRR suffered what officials classified as a "minor" derailment in Rye. The Metro-North train ran off the tracks late in the afternoon of Thursday May 18th, leaving passengers stranded and suffering minor injuries. The Long Island train accident occurred behind the Avon building at a busy interchange just after 5 PM. MTA reports show that several cars in the train "misaligned" during the afternoon commute as travelers were trying to get back home after the workday.

Thankfully, nobody was seriously hurt in this latest Long Island train accident but that could have been due to pure luck. The 12-car train was carrying nearly 200 passengers and had just entered a slow speed zone prior to the derailment. Investigators credit that reduced speed for the lack of injuries and the relatively minor damage caused by this latest crash.

Several passengers were treated for minor bumps and bruises at the scene but none were transported to hospitals.

Clean up crews had the Long Island train accident cleaned up within an hour and all the passengers were transferred to another train to complete their afternoon commute. The MTA has not uncovered the reason for this latest train derailment in New York but with hundreds of miles of track and a budget that stretches thinner almost every year, it's not too far of a stretch to think that poor maintenance may have played a part. The MTA will also investigate if train operator error played any part in this latest disruption.

If you have been injured in a while riding public rail transportation, contact an experienced New York City train accident attorney immediately.
