Fatal Bicycle Accident in Manhattan Marks Sad Milestone for Bike-Sharing in NYC

On Behalf of | Jul 3, 2017 | Bicycle Accidents

A fatal bicycle accident in New York City claimed the life of a 36-year old man earlier this month and was the first deadly accident involving NYC’s premiere bike-sharing program Citi Bike. The accident occurred in Chelsea on Monday June 13th as Dan Hanegby, an investment banker and native from Brooklyn, was riding through the neighborhood during early morning traffic.

Some media reports allege that Hanegby swerved to avoid a parked vehicle and was struck by a bus travelling in the same direction. However, at least one media outlet claims to have access to a video recording that shows the bus, not Hanegby was at fault for this tragic bicycle accident in New York City. In fact, the report released by The Gothamist claims that Hanegby was travelling in a straight and orderly path when the city bus ran into him, throwing him to the ground where he was crushed under the vehicle’s rear tires.

The NYPD has declined to press charges (or even issue a summons) to the driver of the city bus. However, if further investigation into the fatal bicycle accident in Manhattan reveals he was indeed at fault, the driver could be held liable in a civil action brought by the family. The lawsuit would seek to recover damages for the victim’s pain and suffering for the period of time he survived after the accident and for the financial support which the victim would have contributed to his family members throughout his lifetime along with funeral expenses.

Citi Bike has been in operation since 2013. Hanegby’s death is the first associated with this bike-sharing program and is only the second in the history of the 103 million rides banked by all bike-sharing programs. While death might be a rare occurrence, injuries from collisions with motor vehicles are not.
