Subway Accident in New York City Leaves Worker Seriously Injured

A disturbing subway accident in New York City late last month left an New York City Transit worker seriously injured. The individual was riding on a "work train" in NYC's underground when-in the words of the MTA spokesperson-it "bumped into" another work train. The train accident occurred in the 53rd Street tunnel that travels between Manhattan and Queens.

Officials were quick to report that there were no passengers on either of the trains at the time of the crash. And while the MTA is sticking to the claim that the collision was minor, the "bump" carried enough force to injure at least one worker. In fact, the FDNY had to remove the injured individual on a stretcher from the Manhattan side of the tunnel.

There's no word on the exact cause of the crash but it appears that the worker was part of the 400-person crew repairing and upgrading 2,700 feet of track in that area. No doubt investigators will be examining whether the 24-hour push to get the work done on time played a part in this failure of jobsite safety.

New York City, as owner of the subway system, and the New York City Transit Authority (a subsidiary of the MTA) who operates the subway system are responsible for the subway system and to reasonably ensure the safety of its passengers and employees. Despite the efforts of the MTA, TA and City of New York, hundreds of New Yorkers are still left in danger-as several high-profile train derailments in the City have suggested over the past two years.

If you've been injured while riding the trains in NYC-whether you were a passenger or employee, or walking down its stairways or on its platforms, the City of New York and/or the New York city Transit Authority could be financially liable for your injuries.
