Tragic Subway Accident in Manhattan Leaves MTA Maintenance Worker Dead

On Behalf of | Mar 30, 2018 | Subway Accidents

A fatal subway accident in Manhattan has claimed the life of a maintenance worker. The 23-year-old employee was involved in necessary clean-up on a stretch of subway track that runs under the intersection of Lexington Avenue and 125th Street early on the morning of March 20th when he apparently fell from on high, striking his head as he did so. Emergency responders were called immediately to the scene but they found the victim unresponsive on the ground with severe head trauma. He was declared dead shortly thereafter.

NYPD investigators are trying to reconstruct the accident but it appears as if the victim fell from an elevated platform within the train tunnel. The MTA also sent its own accident investigation team to determine exactly what happened. This is the first track-related death of an MTA employee in two years.

The victim had been tasked with removing debris from the tunnel and it’s unclear whether he was working alone at the time of the fall. It’s also unclear whether or not he was wearing the appropriate safety gear at the time of this tragic accident.

Maintenance workers-like construction workers-must adhere to a set of OSHA and industry safety standards every day. If safety standards are not maintained, implemented and enforced, tragic accidents can occur. If a maintenance worker or construction worker is working in unsafe conditions or proper safety equipment was not provided or failed, the City of New York could be held responsible for the worker’s injuries or untimely death. If necessary safety precautions were neglected, the City itself could be held financially liable for this latest subway accident in New York City.
