Number of People Hurt in Pedestrian and Bicycle Accidents in New York City is Rising

On Behalf of | Jun 19, 2018 | Bicycle Accidents, Pedestrian Accidents

The number of people being hurt on by motorists on city streets is not decreasing-even as the city sinks hundreds of thousands of dollars into various “safety improvements” around NYC. In fact, new stats show that the number of bicycle and pedestrian accidents in New York is actually on the rise.

After all the hype surrounding the citywide safety commitment embodied by Vision Zero, coupled with infrastructural changes, those figures should be falling.

However, according to new statistics released by City Hall, the number of people injured in pedestrian and bicycle accidents in New York City last month is climbing. Data shows that 971 people were injured while riding bicycles or walking in NYC in the month of April alone. That’s not including the 37 people who were killed. To put those numbers in perspective, when averaged out over the month:

  • More than one pedestrian or bicyclist was injured for every hour of every day for the entire month.
  • More than one person lost their life for every day in April.
  • To date, 4,326 people were injured in collisions with automobiles in 2018.

That’s nearly 200 more victims this year compared to last.

There seems to be no real explanation as to why New Yorkers are even more at risk now than they were a year ago. Whether on foot or on a bike, you owe it to yourself to do everything you can to stay safe.

  • Stick to bicycle lanes, crosswalks, sidewalks, and pedestrian pathways.
  • Err on the side of caution and never assume that a driver sees you or that they will yield the right of way as they are required to do by law.

However, if you do find yourself seriously injured because of a negligent motorist, contact a New York City pedestrian accident attorney immediately.
