Bizarre Bus Accident Leaves on Injured and Several Passengers Stranded

On Behalf of | Aug 13, 2018 | Bus Accidents

You see them every day in NYC-tour buses, sightseeing buses, MTA public transportation buses. And while bus accidents in New York City are seemingly becoming more common, most involve collisions with other vehicles (including other buses). But a bizarre bus accident on the New Jersey Turnpike shows just how dangerous riding these massive motor coaches can be.

Dozens of passengers were crowded onto a Greyhound bus traveling down the highway on June 15th when something went terribly wrong. A fire erupted in the bus’s undercarriage and flame quickly spread up the sides of the vehicle. Passenger flew into a panic. The quick-thinking driver pulled the vehicle to the side of the road. There was a mad scramble for the emergency exits as the flames continued to engulf the vehicle. Everyone got out but at least one passenger was injured in the chaotic escape.

“We could have all died,” said one survivor looking back on the near-tragedy. The flames eventually engulfed the entire vehicle and it burned to a charred, blackened shell. The horrified passengers were forced to wait on the side of the highway for another bus coming from Delaware before they were able to continue on their way.

In bus accidents like this in New York City, investigators would likely be looking for a mechanical malfunction as the cause of this potentially deadly fire. Reports show that this particular bus was inspected before the accident but a more thorough investigation into the specifics of that routine inspection will be looking for potential hazards that the maintenance crew may have missed.

An experienced bus accident attorney in New York City can help victims of similar bus fires seek compensation for injuries, lost or damaged personal property, lost time from work and even emotional scarring caused by this traumatic event.
