Deadly Apartment Fire in Brooklyn Leaves Many Injured and Homeless

An apartment fire in Brooklyn turned deadly earlier this month when one of the victims of the blaze succumbed to their injuries at a city hospital. The apartment fire in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Crown Heights broke out around six in the morning on August 17th. The flames quickly spread from the ground floor to the stories above, trapping residents in smoke and flames.

FDNY was on scene within minutes of receiving the call for help but they were too late to save one woman. Three other residents were taken to the hospital as well, suffering from a variety of fire-related injuries including smoke inhalation. Several responding firefighters were treated for minor injuries as well.

An investigation into this New York City apartment fire uncovered that the blaze started in a deli located on the ground floor of the four-story building. The restaurant was closed at the time. Investigators are trying to discover whether negligence played any part in the deadly fire. If the cause is pinpointed, this would be of tremendous help to the injured victims in proving a case against the at-fault parties.

Landlords, business owners and contractors can be held responsible for their negligent actions. In cases involving improper installation, maintenance, or repair of commercial-grade equipment (such as ovens, cooktops, and other electrical appliances) the installer may also be held responsible.

The surviving victims of this Brooklyn apartment fire and the family members of the deceased woman can bring a claim against the building owner, deli owner and any other party who was at fault for this tragedy. Victims may be able to recover funeral and medical expenses, pain and suffering and lost income even by those who died but would have contributed to the family during their lifetime.
