Electrocution Accident in New York Leaves Construction Worker Seriously Injured

On Behalf of | Oct 30, 2018 | Electrocution Accident

A construction worker was seriously injured in an electrocution accident in Manhattan. The man was working at an apartment building under construction on Cherry Street when faulty wiring gave him a massive shock. FDNY first responders rushed to the scene and whisked the victim to a nearby hospital. He reportedly suffered severe burns to his hands, arms, neck, and head.

The FDNY immediately filed a complaint and request for an inspection with the Department of Buildings in order to prevent further electrocution accidents and discover whether shoddy safety practices had contributed to the man’s injuries. Not only will inspectors be looking at the actual accident site, they will also likely be looking at a sizable chunk of the electrical work in the building to ensure everything is up to code before the apartment building fully opens to new residents.

Though the apartment building is still under construction, new residents began moving in earlier this year. The tower itself has come under close scrutiny by the press and advocates for economically challenged residents because of its “stripped down” nature.

The building is allegedly part of an affordable housing project but lacks almost all of the amenities offered in its sister tower right down the street. This has led some to wonder whether or not the company in charge of construction at the site may have cut additional corners during the building process. Electrocution accidents in New York are one of the most common fatal construction accidents in the city. OSHA lists this type of safety hazard as one of the top four risks to human life at jobsites throughout New York.

New York’s Labor Law can be invoked to hold the property owner and general contractor responsible for the happening of this accident. However, it is important to select an attorney who is experienced in these kinds of case.
