School Bus Accident in Brooklyn Leaves Children Scared but Uninjured

On Behalf of | Nov 23, 2018 | Bus Accidents

A frightening school bus accident in Brooklyn late last month left a group of school children shaken but thankfully uninjured. The bus was loaded with young children traveling down New Utrecht Avenue near the intersection of 53rd Street when a black sedan turned into the side of the bus, striking the door of the vehicle. Both vehicles came to a stop but the children were forced to stay put as the car was physically blocking their exit.

FDNY first responders arrived within minutes of the crash and were able to pull the car away from the bus and pry the jammed doors open. The children were evacuated from the bus and evaluated but none had sustained injury.

The driver of the automobile which collided with the school bus remained at the scene. While this accident is still under investigation, it appears as if the car was merging into the bus’s lane when the two vehicles collided. Thankfully, neither the car nor the bus was traveling quickly so the force of the impact was minimized.

Had either vehicle been speeding, the likelihood that the young victims would have suffered serious injuries would have been dramatically increased. Indeed, speed is one of the top factors in all injurious car accidents in New York City-not only resulting in increased risk of injury but also increased risk of fatal injuries as well.

In school bus accidents in New York City, at fault drivers can be held financially responsible for the injuries sustained by the children passengers. Under New York’s no-fault law, the insurance company for the bus would be obligated to pay for the hospital, medical and other health related expenses incurred by the children, driver and any other occupants of the bus.
