Bicycle Accident in Manhattan Leaves Elderly Man Dead

On Behalf of | Apr 10, 2019 | Bicycle Accidents

A fatal bicycle accident in New York City month left an elderly cyclist dead. The victim, a 72-year-old, was struck by an uncaring and reckless driver on Eighth Avenue around 6 in the morning on February 4th. The crash happened near the intersection with 45th Street.

When police arrived on scene they found the man lying next to his mangled bike. The driver of the truck which struck him was nowhere to be found. Eye witnesses said that the elderly man was riding his bicycle in a bike lane in accordance with all NYC traffic laws when the truck crossed into the lane, struck the victim, and then drove off.

EMTs were at the scene of the crash within minutes and rushed the victim of this terrifying bicycle accident in Manhattan to nearby Bellevue Hospital. However, his injuries proved too severe and doctors were unable to save his life.

After a short investigation, the NYPD was able to identify the driver who was behind the wheel at the time-perhaps due to an eyewitness or camera surveillance footage captured at the scene of the accident. However, as of the evening of February 4th when the story broke on citywide media, there had yet been no arrests. This particular stretch of street has seen its fair share of New York City bicycle accidents. Last year alone 17 cyclists were struck by drivers on this same stretch of 8th Avenue (between 42nd Street and 48th Street).
