Woman Coping with Lifelong Disability After Pedestrian Accident in Manhattan

On Behalf of | May 27, 2019 | Pedestrian Accidents

Two people were injured and one of the victims, a woman, was left permanently disabled after a horrific pedestrian accident in Manhattan earlier this month. The crash happened on May 11th around 10 PM at the intersection of Murray Street and West Street in Lower Manhattan when a young driver failed to yield the right of way to two people crossing the street.

The victims, a 42-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man, were both struck by the car and were both injured. However, the man suffered only minor injuries while the woman’s foot was completely severed by the impact. The driver remained at the scene and is now facing multiple criminal charges.

While traumatic amputations are not common injuries in pedestrian accidents in New York City, they do occur and, unfortunately, can leave victims coping with lifelong pain, disability, and decreased ability to earn. Indeed, amputation is one of the most costly types of injuries you can suffer in a car accident when you consider the surgery, the extended recovery period, rehabilitation and physical therapy and having to relearn some basic tasks like walking. When you add up the actual immediate costs and the long-term financial impact, the total cost is almost astronomical. This is not even taking into account the effect of the emotional trauma.

Under New York’s no-fault law, the vehicle’s insurance company is required to pay for all reasonable health related expenses. Unfortunately, the law only requires a maximum of $50,000 coverage. In cases of catastrophic injuries, that amount may simply not be enough.

If you’ve suffered a severe injury like an amputation after being struck by a negligent driver in NYC, you are entitled to compensation for your pain and suffering, unpaid medical expenses and lost time from work. You need to speak with an experienced pedestrian accident attorney in New York City as soon as you can to protect your rights as a victim and safeguard your claim to a substantial financial award.
