New Study Shows More Kids Drowning in Swimming Pool Nationwide

The summer season is the time when the risk of drowning accidents in New York City increases dramatically. With the opening of public and private pools, the risk of children drowning spikes dramatically. A new study tracking drowning accident data nationwide has found that the number of children under the age of 15 who died in drowning accidents has risen much higher than previous years.

The study, produced by Pool Safety–sponsored by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)-found that in 2016, 389 kids under the age of 15 drowned in pools and hot tubs. A vast majority of those deaths-74%-involved children 5-years-old or younger.

Previously, the number of children drowning in pools even declined, partially as a result of safety campaigns and legislation mandating safety equipment at public pools. However, drowning accidents still remained the leading cause of accidental death in children between the ages of 1 and 4 and the second leading cause of accidental death in children between the ages of 5 and 14.

Dr. Robert Glatter-an ER doctor at Lenox Hill Hospital-says there are ways parents can minimize the risk of pool accidents in New York City.

  • Teach kids to swim (as early as the age of 1)
  • Give swimming children your undivided attention
  • Stay close enough to children that you can rescue them if need be
  • Make all home pools and spas “child safe” with fences, locks, and alarms

A pool’s owner or operator has a responsibility to prevent drowning accidents in New York. If the owner fails in that responsibility, their failure could make them responsible for any injuries caused by a drowning or near drowning incident including medical and/or funeral expenses, lost wages and financial support in the event of death.
