Elderly Man Killed in Collision in Harlem

A 64-year-old man was killed in a fatal pedestrian accident in Harlem earlier this month when a multi-car pileup at an intersection created chaos along Frederick Douglass Boulevard. According to accident reconstruction from multiple eyewitness accounts, a black livery cab was heading down the street when it collided with the victim-who was crossing at the time with the aid of a cane. The man was tossed through the air and landed several feet away. The cab then continued further down the street and crashed into at least one other vehicle.

EMS crews rushed to the site of the pedestrian accident in Harlem but the victim had already passed away at the scene.

Witnesses told local media outlets that the street is a very busy one and that multiple complaints about the amount and speed of traffic through the neighborhood have had no impact.

Sadly, statistics show that older individuals (55-years-old and older) and young children (under the age of 18-years) have the highest rates of injury and fatalities in pedestrian accidents in New York City. Analysts suggest the trend is because their reaction times are slower than middle-aged individuals and their mobility is significantly decreased.

The driver of the livery cab stayed at the scene of the accident and cooperated with investigators. No charges have been filed and police has yet to state whether any criminality was involved in the crash. However, this has no effect on the personal injury lawsuit that can be filed which would seek compensation for funeral expenses and pain and suffering for the time the victim survived after the accident. If the victim was working, the family could seek compensation for the amount of money he would have contributed to the family over his lifetime.

If you have been injured by a negligent driver-whether or not the NYPD files criminal charges-you can seek compensation for your losses via a personal injury lawsuit.
