Two Fatal Bicycle Accidents in New York City on the Same Day

On Behalf of | Aug 13, 2019 | Bicycle Accidents

Two bicycle accidents in New York have claimed the lives of a pair of riders, bringing the total number of cyclists killed on city streets this year to 17. That number is far higher than the number of people killed on bicycles during this same period last year and puts NYC on pace to make 2019 a trend-shattering year for tragic bicycle accidents. This even as the city spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on seemingly ineffectual safety improvements.

The first fatal bike accident happened on Staten Island on Tuesday, July 23rd around noon. A 17-year-old boy was struck by a tow truck at an intersection. He was killed instantly. The driver of the truck stayed at the scene of the accident and was reportedly cooperating with NYPD investigators who (at the time the story was published in media outlets) had yet to determine the actual cause of the collision.

The second bicycle fatality also involved a truck. Just hours after the first fatal collision in NYC, a 58-year-old man died after being struck by a box truck. This fatal bicycle accident in Brooklyn allegedly occurred when the rider “made contact” with the side of the box truck. While the official investigation report had yet to announce a cause of the collision, the details of the crash sound eerily similar to what cyclists call a “Right Hook” collision-a type of failure-to-yield accident that happens when driver does not see or fails to allow bicycles to pass before merging, making turns, or straying from the travel lane.

While it’s every bicyclist’s responsibility to ride defensively and assume that automobile operators do not see them (and will not stop for them), when a careless driver strikes a bicyclist they become financially liable for that victim’s injuries.
