Fatal Construction Accident in the Bronx Caused by Partial Building Collapse

On Behalf of | Sep 6, 2019 | Construction Accidents

A partial building collapse in the Bronx has killed one man and sent five others to hospital with serious injuries. The construction accident in New York City occurred on August 27th when a four-story building under construction along East 208th street suffered a catastrophic structural failure. The third floor of the building completely collapsed on the floors below, cause the entire structure to pancake in on itself.

There were multiple workers inside the building at the time of the collapse. When rescue crews arrived on scene, they pulled five men from the rubble and rushed them to a nearby hospital. Two were listed as having serious, life-threatening injuries. The other three reported suffered only minor injuries.

The body of a sixth man was discovered on what had been the second floor of the building while crews were removing concrete blocks and other debris. Because there was fear that the additional stories of the building would collapse, emergency bracing was put in place to protect the rescue and recovery workers.

The Department of Buildings was called in to investigate the scene of this fatal construction accident in the Bronx and determined that the crew had placed too many cinder blocks on the third floor of the building and overloaded the structure’s integrity.

Preventable construction accidents in New York, like this very building collapse, claim the lives of far too many workers every year. In spite of increased inspection and regulation, workers are still dying and suffering life-altering injuries while on the job.
