Fatal Crosswalk Accident in New York City Claims Life of Elderly Woman

On Behalf of | Sep 27, 2019 | Crosswalk Accident

A woman was killed by a reckless driver last month as she was legally crossing the street at an intersection that some have dubbed a “kill zone.” The crosswalk accident in New York City happened on August 10th around 9 PM at the intersection of West 15th Street and 6th Avenue in Chelsea. The victim (a 67-year-old woman) was crossing in a marked crosswalk when the driver of a pickup truck failed to yield and struck both the victim and her friend.

Both women were rushed to a nearby hospital. One of the women survived with relatively minor injuries. The victim who died suffered in the hospital for several days before succumbing to her injuries.

An NYPD investigation into this fatal crosswalk accident in Chelsea discovered that the women were not only in the painted crosswalk but were walking with the light. The driver violated multiple traffic laws and will be held accountable.

However, he was not the first driver to injure or kill pedestrians along this stretch of road this year. In fact, the number of collisions along 6th Avenue has led some to call the street a “kill zone” for pedestrians and bicyclists who regularly come into contact with automobiles. In just in the past three months alone, three people have been killed along the street. Since 2016, 18 pedestrians and 6 bicyclists have been injured just down the road at the intersection of 23rd Street and 6th Avenue.

What’s causing this disproportionate number of automobile accidents in Chelsea? Some say it’s the very design of the streets in this neighborhood which cater to automobile traffic and leave cyclists and pedestrians struggling for safe passage.

If you’ve been injured while crossing the street legally, the owner and driver of the vehicle who struck you can be held financially liable for your injuries and lost wages even if no criminal charges are filed.
