Wrongful Conviction in New York City Overturned After 26 Years

A man is free after spending 26 years of his life in prison for a crime he didn’t commit after a wrongful conviction in New York City court back in 1993. The man had been identified by witnesses as the trigger man in a deadly 1993 Bedford-Stuyvesant shooting that killed one man an injured a ten-year-old girl. He was convicted, largely based on this testimony, and sentenced to prison.

The victim always maintained his innocence but his case just recently came under the scrutiny of the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Conviction Review Unit. Upon interviewing the key witnesses again, one of the individuals recanted her story while the other claimed they could not even recall the details of the incident.

Since its creation, this division of the Brooklyn DA’s office has already been responsible for freeing 27 victims of wrongful conviction and vacating those sentences. And while the release of prisoners held unjustly is an amazing victory, nothing can repay these men and women for the time they spent behind bars.

In this case, the man was released after spending 26 years in prison after a wrongful conviction in Brooklyn. There has been no word on whether the man will file a civil lawsuit against the City of New York but in similar cases, such civil lawsuits have resulted in sizeable financial awards for victims of false arrest, wrongful conviction, and other associated miscarriages of justice.
