Underground Explosion in New York City Causes Thousands of Dollars’ Worth of Damage

On Behalf of | Feb 5, 2020 | Underground Explosion

An underground explosion in New York City earlier this month left over a hundred residents without power and one man without a car. Thankfully, there were no injuries as a result of this terrifying explosion but only luck kept innocent victims out of harm’s way.

The explosion occurred early on the morning of December 4th in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn. Utilities owned and operated by Con Ed somehow caused a massive explosion that killed power to customers and set a man’s car on fire.

The power remained out in the area for over 30 hours as the utility company struggled to reroute necessary services and repair the damage. The owner of a 2009 Toyota Camry was not so lucky. Wilfido Mazarigos woke to find his car completely incinerated after the explosion ignited his vehicle. The car-his only transportation-was a total loss.

As frightening as this latest underground explosion in New York City was, at least there were no injuries. Similar explosions in the past have sent people to New York City hospitals suffering from traumatic injuries caused by the force of the explosion and flying debris including manholes-which can weigh up to 250 pounds.

While the customers whose power was interrupted may get some compensation for the loss (maybe a discount on their next electric bill), Mr. Mazarigos should be able to get his car replaced by Con Ed. If Con Ed fights responsibility, a qualified New York City accident attorney experienced in these kind of cases should be to handle this case and get the compensation that he deserves. Had he been injure, he would have be able to bring a claim for his injuries, lost time from work and out of pocket expenses.
