Fatal Apartment Fire in New York City Claims Lives of Four Residents

An apartment fire in the Bronx earlier this month claimed the lives of four women who lived in the building. FDNY received the distress call around 7:20 on the evening of April 1st. They arrived at the Grand Concourse building within minutes and fought to tamp down the flames. The fire quickly rose to a three-alarm blaze and filled the upper stories of the building with flames and thick smoke. The firefighters extinguished the inferno in less than two hours, but not fast enough to save four women who lived on the sixth floor.

The women all lived in two neighboring apartments on the top floor of the building. That's the floor on which the fire started. Everyone else was able to get out of the apartment building alive.

Investigators will be looking into the cause of the blaze and whether there were working smoke detectors in place within the apartments. Detectors are required in apartment buildings by NYC code and failure to have working detectors can result in fines.

If investigators uncover the root cause of the fire was negligence on the part of the apartment building's owner, the surviving family members could potentially bring a lawsuit against those individuals in civil court.

An experienced apartment fire attorney in New York City knows how to conduct a thorough investigation and gather the necessary evidence in order to prevail at trial. The attorney will also provide guidance to the victims and families from the time the case is taken in through the trial process. Even though many such cases often result in pre-trial settlements, the case must be worked up thoroughly so that when negotiations start, the attorney will never have to wonder what information the insurance company has that might torpedo the case. This way, the attorney is always negotiating from strength and not from weakness, insuring the best possible recovery.
