Boating Accident Highlights Danger of High-Speed Watercraft

On Behalf of | Aug 13, 2021 | Boating Accident

Boating accidents in New York City are far too common in the summer months as amateur and inexperienced (or intoxicated) individuals get behind the controls of these powerful watercraft. And while we may think that the dangers from such craft are limited to the rivers, lakes, and other waterways in the greater New York area, one recent boating accident highlights the danger to individuals anywhere around these waterways.

Beachgoers in North Wildwood, New Jersey were shocked when a motorboat rocketed up out of the water and onto the beach—just inches away from smashing into innocent victims—as they enjoyed a sunny day last month. Several near-victims were forced to dive out of their beach chairs and scramble away from the watercraft as it plowed through the sand.

One eyewitness told media outlets that they just assumed that the boat would turn away from shore at some point but never did. Thankfully, no one was in the water at the time the craft came barreling up out of the ocean.

Police were called to investigate this bizarre boating accident and found that there were two women, one man, and a dog aboard the craft at the time of the crash. Investigators had yet to uncover a reason for the near-miss accident but will likely be looking at the operator’s blood alcohol content as well as for evidence of mechanical failure.

Even in instances where boating accidents in New York City are caused by mechanical failure, the boat operator or its owner could potentially be held financially liable for any injuries caused by a crash if the victim can demonstrate that they failed to properly maintain their watercraft in a safe fashion.
