Bicycle Accident in Queens Claims Life Near Citi Field

On Behalf of | Jul 21, 2014 | Bicycle Accidents

Another fatal bicycle accident in New York City claimed the life of a commuter. A minivan collided with a bicyclist shortly after noon on June 10th near Citi Field on a stretch of street that New Yorkers often call “The Roosevelt Raceway.” The cyclist was killed instantly. This is the eighth fatal bicycle accident in New York City already this year-that’s already higher than the number of fatalities for this same period in 2013. While the NYPD investigated, the driver of the minivan was not immediately charged with a crime, though he was eventually summonsed for a speeding violation.

The unnamed victim (who was in his 40s) was riding westbound along Roosevelt Avenue, underneath the No. 7 subway tracks when he was struck. Even experienced cyclists try to avoid this section of the street simply because too many of the automobiles travelling it are speeding, making the short stretch “scary” and even “terrifying” for commuters on two wheels.

Witnesses say the minivan was travelling in the same direction as the bicycle and struck the cyclist from behind. Pictures and video show that the man’s bicycle was completely destroyed and the windshield of the van was smashed out.

GatewayStreets.org, a transportation safety advocacy site based in St. Louis, reports that while bicycle accidents involving motor vehicle strike from behind aren’t the most uncommon type of bicycle accident, they are the most deadly, often due to the speed of the vehicles involved. Indeed, statistics collected by the League of American Bicyclists show that strikes from behind account for 40% of all fatal bicycle accidents-twice as many as then next most lethal crash type.

If you or a loved one has been struck by a motorist while riding our streets, contact a New York City Bicycle accident attorney immediately to discuss your case. Often, the liability rests on the shoulders of the driver and that person can be made to pay for pain and suffering, unpaid medical expenses, lost wages and more. Call the Law Offices of Nussin S.
