NYPD Says Motorist Failure to Yield Left Model Brain Dead

The NYPD investigation into a bicycle accident in New York has concluded that the driver of a Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation "red bus" is to blame. The accident, which occurred on Roosevelt Island's Main Street, left a 29-year old Swedish model, Anna Maria Mostrom, functionally brain dead. While doctor's were hopeful, the injuries she has suffered we re likely irreversible.

Bicycle Accident in Queens Claims Life Near Citi Field

Another fatal bicycle accident in New York City claimed the life of a commuter. A minivan collided with a bicyclist shortly after noon on June 10th near Citi Field on a stretch of street that New Yorkers often call "The Roosevelt Raceway." The cyclist was killed instantly. This is the eighth fatal bicycle accident in New York City already this year-that's already higher than the number of fatalities for this same period in 2013. While the NYPD investigated, the driver of the minivan was not immediately charged with a crime, though he was eventually summonsed for a speeding violation.

Elderly Cyclist Killed in Brooklyn Auto Accident--Sheds Light on "Problem Areas"

In May, a Brooklyn motor vehicle accident claimed the life of a well-loved father and friend. 74-year old Mai Zhang was struck and killed while riding his bicycle along Benson Avenue in Brooklyn. The driver of the Nissan SUV involved in the accident and a doctor who happened to be passing by attempted to save the man but Zhang's injuries proved too much. He was pronounced dead when EMTs arrived. The NYPD did not be press charges, saying that no "criminality" was involved in the case.

Citi Bike Accidents Pose a Costly Problem

Citi Bike, the bike rental service that launched earlier this year, has somewhere around 30,000 annual members who have logged over 270,000 miles on the rented bicycles. It sounds like a great thing for New York, until you learn about the Citi Bike accidents and their potential cost to innocent individuals on the street.

So far this year, the streets of New York City have proven safer for bicyclist compared to this time last season. That news may come as a shock to many especially with the increasing number of cyclists hitting the streets and tragic news stories such as the horrific tale of an accident which claimed the life of a 25-year old woman earlier this month.

Alarming Number of Cyclists Killed and Injured on NYC Streets in 2012

There were nearly 200,000 motor vehicle accidents on New York City streets last year. That's according to the preliminary data collected by the New York Police Department between January of 2012 and December. Of those 200,000 accidents, over 3,800 involved cyclists. That total number of bicycle accidents is up 8% from last year's tally of 3,500. Thankfully, the number of cyclist killed by motorists is down but only just: there were two fewer fatalities in 2012.

Delivery cyclist crackdown to begin in NYC

New York City officials are currently preparing to crack down on commercial bicycle delivery riders who violate regulations in a variety of ways. However, safety advocates hope that officials will pay equal or greater attention to the aggressive crosswalk culture that inspires most bicycle accidents in the first place.
