Two Tour Buses Collide in Times Square; 14 Inured

The New York tourism industry is rocking after two sightseeing bus crashes in as many months. The shocking Times Square tour bus accident in New York City sent 14 people seeking emergency medical services with three of those listed in serious condition. This comes just days after a tour bus owned and operated by a company in Chinatown, a bus full of New Yorkers, left the road and overturned, killing two unsuspecting passengers.

On August fifth of this year, at roughly 3:30 PM, two double-decker sightseeing buses crashed into each other near the corner of 47th Street in Times Square. One of the buses continued on to strike a traffic light which came crashing down in a hail of broken glass and flying debris sending bystanders scattering in all directions. Many of these bystanders were among the most badly injured.

The accident was allegedly caused when a Gray Line Sightseeing bus sideswiped a CitySights NY bus on a stretch of one-way street. The bus driver then overcorrected, jumping the curb, finally bringing the streetlight (lamppost and all) crashing to the ground.

Ironically, both tour bus lines are owned by the same parent company.

One of the tour guides fared the worst out of all the inured. She was thrown forward by the impact and trapped under the dashboard of one of the busses until rescue crews could extract her. She was taken to the hospital with serious but not life-threatening injuries.

As serious as this crash was, it could have been much worse. The accident occurred just yards from a busy gathering place where tourists wait in lines to get discounted tickets to Broadway theater productions.
