12-Year Old Boy Falls Out of Moving School

| Oct 30, 2014 | School and Daycare Accidents

A shocking school bus accident in the Bronx has left a 12-year old boy critically injured. According to reports, sometime during the daily commute on October 20th, the boy (identified as A.J. Pediford) fell out of the emergency exit at the back of the bus and landed on the pavement. The boy was on his way home from New York City Children’s Center when the accident occurred at the corner of East 156th Street and Courtland Avenue. A.J.’s injuries are so severe that he fell into a coma after arriving at Jacobi Hospital. The boy’s father told reporters that A.J. broke a bone at the base of his skull that holds his head onto his neck.

The official report is that the special needs boy somehow opened the emergency exit immediately prior to falling or jumping out of the bus. A.J.’s father, Maliek Pediford said in a statement that he doesn’t understand how A.J. could have even got the emergency door open. “. . .that’s supposed to be locked 24/7. . .”

In addition to the bus driver, there was a matron on the bus. Why didn’t the driver or the matron see the door open before the boy fell? Why didn’t they to react in time before A.J. plummeted into the street? The father and investigative reporters have reached out to the Department of Education regarding the driver’s and matron’s action (or inaction) but so far there has been no official response.

Young A.J. went from a happy, healthy young man to a severely injured hospital patient who will have to relearn how to walk. The months of physical therapy, piled on top of medical bills, will add up to huge hospital, medical and rehabilitative expenses, not to speak of the horrible pain and suffering A.J. will now endure for the rest of his life.
