Woman Drowns in the Ocean off Jacob Riis Park in the Rockaways

A woman was killed and a young man was seriously injured in a drowning accident in Queens on Saturday, June 15th. The two victims were swimming at Jacob Riis Park when the rough surf proved too much for them. A call was placed to the nearby 100th Precinct emergency services that there were swimmers in distress at the beach. Police found the two victims washed up on the sand and attempted CPR. EMTs from the FDNY rushed the victims to nearby St. John's Episcopal Hospital. The man survived but was listed in critical condition. The woman was declared dead after arriving at the hospital.

If not for the swift response of rescue crews, this terrifying boating accident would have ended in tragedy. Thankfully, all of the victims survived-though one was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Potential False Arrest Case in New York City Complicated When Officer Lies

A young man arrested for burglary may have a potential false arrest case in New York City or at least enough evidence to argue for a lesser punishment thanks to the actions of the dishonest officer who arrested him. In February a young man was arrested by an officer assigned to the grand larceny squad on suspicion of burglary. However, the case was rapidly escalated when the officer filed charges of assault against the individual. In a criminal complaint the officer stated that he had been struck by the suspect's vehicle during the arrest and had suffered minor injuries to his arm and elbow.

Bicycle Accident in New York City Results In Arrest

A potentially-fatal bicycle accident in New York City earlier this month has resulted in the arrest of an off duty firefighter. The individual (who was later identified as an FDNY firefighter) was caught on video apparently intentionally trying to drive his vehicle into a bicyclist on the West Side Highway in Manhattan on June 6th. The disturbing incident happened at the intersection of 24th Street and 12th Avenue and apparently stemmed from an argument between the two individuals. Eyewitness testimony states that the cyclist had likely snapped a photo of the vehicle after it narrowly missed striking him, initiating the entire argument.

Apartment Accident in New York City Results in $50K Fine and Criminal Charges

A property developer found responsible for a fatal apartment accident in New York City escaped serving jail time but will have to pay a $50,000 fine for contributing to the death of a two-year-old girl. The victim as sitting on the sidewalk outside her Upper West Side apartment complex with her grandmother in 2015 when loose stone and terra cotta fell from the façade of the building, striking her. The girl was killed instantly. The grandmother suffered serious injuries.

The summer season is the time when the risk of drowning accidents in New York City increases dramatically. With the opening of public and private pools, the risk of children drowning spikes dramatically. A new study tracking drowning accident data nationwide has found that the number of children under the age of 15 who died in drowning accidents has risen much higher than previous years.

Boating Accident on Long Island Leads to Criminal Charges

A boating accident in New York late last month has led to criminal charges being filed against the machine's operator. Late last month a 21-foot motorboat being operated by a 28-year-old man crashed into a crowded marina in Bay Shore, Long Island. Police say that the driver was operating the boat at such a high rate of speed that the impact actually launched the entire vehicle completely out of the water and it landed up on shore. The operator was ejected by the impact and was tossed onto a protective bulkhead at the water's edge.

Investigators Find No Working Smoke Detectors in Aftermath of Apartment Fire in New York City

Investigators are combing through the wreckage left behind after a deadly apartment fire in Harlem that claimed the lives of an entire family-six people in total including four children. In a statement to news media, fire investigators said that they found no evidence of working smoke detectors in the home.

Fatal Bicycle Accident In New York City Makes Fourth Such in South Brooklyn This Year

A deadly bicycle accident in Brooklyn claimed the life of a 29-year old man early last month. Reports from the scene of the crash indicate that the bicyclist was crossing Avenue U near East 33rd Street in Marine Park at around 8 PM on May 13th when he was struck by a Toyota SUV being driven by a 20-year old. When EMTs arrived, they found the victim lying in the roadway with severe head trauma. The victim was rushed to nearby New York Community Hospital but his injuries were too severe. He was pronounced dead on arrival.

Fall from Heights Accident in New York Leaves Construction Worker Hospitalized

A man was hospitalized after a fall at a job site earlier this month. The man was laying masonry on the third floor of a building under construction in Williamsburg when he lost his balance and fell down an interior shaft inside the structure. He tumbled roughly 10 feet and landed on concrete below. EMTs were summoned and the man was rushed to a nearby hospital with unspecified injuries.
