Drunk Driver Slams into Long Island Home

On Behalf of | Jun 14, 2012 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Drivers under the influence are notorious for creating scenes of carnage and destruction. And more often than not, it is an innocent bystander who falls victim. An auto accident apparently caused by a DUI motorist on Memorial Day in Long Island left a home in shambles and the elderly owner shaken.

The accident occurred in the pre-dawn hours in a sleepy Long Island neighborhood as a 21-year-old female attempted to make a turn at a T intersection and failed. She was driving her convertible Mercedes at a high enough rate of speed to cause it to lose control and spin into the side of a house. The car didn’t stop there, either. It crashed through the outer wall of the home and ripped through the kitchen, then continued through the house and into the back yard. Neighbors commented that the force of the accident caused their own homes to quake.

The owner of the home, a 96-year-old woman, was not injured, but was very shaken. Her live-in caregiver was present at the time of the accident, but fortunately she also was not hurt. The driver of the Mercedes and a male passenger were injured, however. When police arrived the driver refused to submit to a breathalyzer test and was charged with DUI.

There is no indication that the driver has a history of DUI offenses, or has behavior issues that would lead her to get behind the wheel at high speed while intoxicated.

If you are injured in an accident in which another is at fault, you may wish to file a claim to receive compensation for your losses. It is often possible to recover medical costs, loss of work time, pain, suffering, and more.
