Bicyclists Safer on NYC Streets In Spite of Horrific Taxi Cab Fatality

On Behalf of | Jun 27, 2013 | Bicycle Accidents

So far this year, the streets of New York City have proven safer for bicyclist compared to this time last season. That news may come as a shock to many especially with the increasing number of cyclists hitting the streets and tragic news stories such as the horrific tale of an accident which claimed the life of a 25-year old woman earlier this month.

It’s no secret that New York City streets are becoming even more crowded. It’s estimated that the number of cyclists using the streets will continue to rise as the mode of transportation gains popularity with the urban population. The City is growing to meet that demand through projects which began during Mayor Bloomberg’s reign in 2010. Over 200 additional miles of bike lanes have already been created on crowded thoroughfares such as Broadway and Ninth Avenue. But those safety measures don’t appear to be keeping up with the demand. It’s estimated that roughly 236,000 New Yorkers ride bicycles every day and some have called the Big Apple the “bicycling capital of the United States.”

It’s true that the growing number of cyclists has led to an increase in bicycle accidents in just the past five or ten years. One particularly awful accident on 125th Street spotlights just how dangerous cycling can be. A 25-year old woman was struck by not one taxi cab but two-hit by the first cab and thrown into the path of the second. Unlike other cycling accidents this past spring, the drivers stayed at the scene until rescuer workers arrived but it made no difference. The woman was later pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital.

These types of taxi accidents are not uncommon in NYC. In fact, the one third of all the motor vehicle collisions in New York involve cabs. However, there is some good news amidst the tragedy. 2013 looks to be on track to set a dramatic decrease in the number of bicycle accidents.

At this time last year, 3,844 cyclists had been injured in automobile or pedestrian collisions. 19 had already been fatally injured. As of May 2013, only 3 cyclists have died in bicycle accidents while just 1,193 have sustained injuries. Still, that number is far too high.

If you or a loved one has been involved in a bicycle accident in New York City, you need to seek out professional legal help in order to receive all the compensation you deserve. There’s no reason you should suffer just because your preferred mode of transportation has two wheels instead of four. Contact the Law Offices of Nussin S.
