Fatal Bicycle Accident in New York City Involved Uber Car

On Behalf of | Jul 30, 2015 | Bicycle Accidents

A terrible three car crash in Brooklyn claimed the life of a cyclist on July 13th. Eyewitness reports state that an out of control driver in an SUV hit the Uber car (carrying three passengers) before it careened off another car and into a bicyclist near the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Dean Street. This latest bicycle accident in New York demonstrates just how vulnerable riders are even when they obey all of the traffic laws.

The bicyclist, 35-year old Alejandro Moran-Marin, was hit so hard that he was tossed into the air “eight or ten feet” and landed several meters away. The bike was crushed under the SUV when it finally came to a stop against the curb. Some people along the three-block route say the SUV had to have been travelling at least 50 miles per hour-far above the posted limit.

The Brooklyn bicycle accident was so violent that it spurred Borough President Eric Adams into action. He demanded that the dangerous intersection near Barclay Center be redesigned to make it safer for drivers and bicyclists alike. Crash data shows that at least three cyclists have been killed at that particular intersection in as many years.

Adams has made it his goal to fast track dangerous streets like these in his Borough, eliminating obstacles and red tape that have kept them from being repaired and rebuilt in the past.

However, none of the pending changes will change the fact that young Moran-Marin’s family has lost a valued and cherished loved one. While there is no word on criminal charges against the driver of the SUV, the surviving family members have the right to file a wrongful death lawsuit as one driver’s actions directly contributed to their family member’s death.
