42-year old Alberta Bagu was killed last week while crossing the street near her Bushwick Brooklyn home. The victim of a hit and run truck accident in New York, Bagu is remembered as a kind and caring mother of two, a sister, a loving wife.
The accident occurred at roughly 10:30 PM on Ditmars Street. Video recorded by multiple security cameras in the area show Mrs. Bagu passing in front of a private sanitation truck. The truck simply started forward and rolled over her without slowing or stopping. The truck then kept driving down the street, leaving the scene of the accident as if nothing had happened. Mrs. Bagu was killed instantly and discovered moments later by passersby.
Emergency services were called but it was clear that nothing could be done to help Mrs. Bagu.
The NYPD are investigating this fatal hit and run and are relying heavily on that surveillance video. They have already questioned at least one driver of that or a similar vehicle but have yet to file charges against the man.
Sanitation trucks and other large commercial vehicles pose a tremendous threat to pedestrians in the city. Each year there are a number of truck accidents in New York City that result in either fatalities or serious injuries because of a driver’s careless operation of heavy machinery. In many cases these accidents could have been avoided had drivers taken just a moment more to ensure their path was clear.
