A shocking bus accident in New York brought one Greenwich Village street to a standstill earlier this month. A man is recovering from life threatening injuries today after being struck and dragged down the street by a privately owned double decker sightseeing bus on July 3rd. The man, an unnamed 50-year old, was seen crossing the street at the intersection of Sixth Avenue and West 4th Street seconds before the double decker bus struck him. The victim was forced under the middle section of the bus and dragged for a short distance, screaming for help all the while.
When rescue crews arrived, they were able to extricate the man from under the bus by jacking the multi-ton Vehicle up on blocks. Once they had the man clear, they rushed him to nearby Bellevue hospital. Reports show the man is suffering from a severe injury to at least one of his legs.
The driver of the bus reportedly stayed at the scene and is cooperating with NYPD officers investigating the accident. One key point in the investigation is the speed of the bus at the time of the accident.
The bus line which operates the sightseeing business (City Sightseeing New York which is itself a subsidiary of Twin American) could likely be found financially responsible for the man’s injuries in a court of law. Similar cases involving bus accidents in New York have resulted in substantial monetary awards for medical expenses, past and future lost wages and pain and suffering.
Drivers of all vehicles have a responsibility to keep pedestrians safe. If you or a loved one has been injured in a bus accident in New York City, you are entitled to be compensated for your injuries. The at-fault parties (including the bus driver and bus owner) should be held accountable.
