New York Man Critically Injured in Bus Accident

On Behalf of | Aug 14, 2015 | Pedestrian Accidents

A young man was rushed to the hospital in critical condition after surviving a shocking bus accident earlier this month. The 34-year old man was simply walking down the sidewalk along Main Street in Orange New Jersey when a 77-year old bus driver in charge of a Coach Commuter bus appeared to lose control of his vehicle. Eyewitnesses report seeing the man struggle with the steering wheel, trying in vain to stop the bus from jumping the curb. The massive vehicle first smashed into a Nissan Altima then jumped the curb and crossed the sidewalk before smashing through the facade of a busy Bank of America location.

Unfortunately, the New York pedestrian was struck head-on by the bus and tossed at least fifteen feet into the air before coming to rest partially underneath a parked vehicle. When rescue crews arrived they found the man alive but in critical condition with life-threatening injuries.

While the exact cause of the bus accident has yet to be determined, it’s likely that the driver will be found at fault for the near-deadly crash.

Similar bus accidents in New York have shown that it’s not just enough having highly skilled and capable operators. Bus drivers involved in accidents often don’t see the pedestrians they hit and when they do, their poor choices make avoiding them nearly impossible. While most bus accidents in New York are less dramatic (often involving pedestrians crossing the street, waiting at crosswalks, or riders entering or exiting the bus) serious, even fatal, crashes have occurred when buses drive up onto pedestrian sidewalks.
