Man Killed in Delivery Truck Accident in New York Marketplace

A driver delivering produce to the Hunts Point Produce Market was killed in a truck accident in the Bronx early on the morning of August 30th. The man, 63-year old Hussain Abbas, had parked his vehicle and exited an instant before he was struck by an 18-wheel tractor-trailer which was backing up. EMS arrived on scene immediately and took the injured man to Lincoln Hospital. It’s unclear if Mr. Abbas actually ended up beneath the vehicle or he was simply struck and fell down but reports show he was suffering from “severe body trauma.” Doctors were unable to save his life.

The area in which the Bronx truck accident occurred has been called “a dangerous place to work” by at least one foreman at the Hunts Point Market-which is the country’s largest wholesale produce market. Numerous hazards including delivery vehicles, forklifts, powered pallet jacks, and other equipment regularly crisscross the yard, often coming within inches of bystanders, delivery people, workers, and other pieces of machinery. And with tight deadlines and a never ending stream of deliveries workers may often be tempted to cut corners and disregard safety protocols.

One long-time employee said that he wasn’t surprised by this tragic truck accident in New York. In the past 14 years, he has seen “a lot of accidents,” in the Hunts Point Market, many of which have ended in severe injuries and lifelong consequences. All it takes is one careless act, a moment of forgetfulness, or the decision to disobey safety standards and a life can be ruined forever or even ended far too soon.
