Bicycle Accident in Brooklyn Leaves Man Struggling for Life

On Behalf of | Nov 10, 2015 | Bicycle Accidents

A terrifying bicycle accident in Brooklyn has left a young man fighting for his life. 27-year old Sean Benz was struck by not one but two vehicles while riding his bicycle between Bedford and Atlantic Avenues in Brooklyn on October 21st. Shockingly, both drivers simply drove away from the scene, leaving Mr. Benz lying on the pavement with 15 broken ribs, a dislocated hip, a broken arm, and broken collar bone.

Mr. Benz is currently hospitalized in stable but critical condition. Doctors have had to sedate him for his own safety while they treat his injuries. Meanwhile, his parents are struggling to cope with the devastating blow and are pleading with NYPD officials to find the people responsible.

The details of the Brooklyn bicycle accident are shocking-especially so since much of it was captured by security cameras and eye witnesses in the area. Mr. Benz was first struck by a white SUV in the parking lot of a gas station. The impact carried such force that he was thrown nearly 15 feet into the street. The second vehicle, a small sedan (possibly a Nissan Maxima), struck him as he lay on the pavement. Neither driver even stopped their vehicle to see what they had hit.

The NYPD is currently investigating the crash and a source allegedly told reporters for the local ABC affiliate that the agency was “confident” that the individuals responsible for this horrific bicycle accident in Bedford-Stuyvesant would be brought to justice.

New York is one of the most dangerous cities in the world for bicyclists. Despite the mayor’s commitment to the Vision Zero policy aimed at eliminating all traffic fatalities, hundreds of people are injured and several killed in bicycle accidents in New York each year-most of which involve motor vehicle collisions.
