Over two dozen people were injured in a bizarre New York City tour bus accident in Pennsylvania over the weekend. The bus was travelling down I-70 when it overturned, throwing passengers around the cabin like rag dolls and ejecting the driver. Two dozen passengers were sent to two local hospitals for a variety of injuries. The bus driver was airlifted to nearby UPMC Presbyterian Hospital with severe head trauma as a result of being thrown through the windshield. When it rolled over, victims said it was like something out of a movie. One passenger reported that there was “shards of glass everywhere” and that passengers were stepping on each other in order to get out of the overturned bus.
The police investigation is focusing on the driver of an SUV that turned into the bus’s travel lane and sideswiped the vehicle. The bus was unable to recover from the impact and left the roadway before rolling and blocking both lanes of traffic. The driver of the SUV was cited for multiple traffic violations. When questioned, he told police that he jerked the wheel because a vehicle in front of him had braked too quickly.
Why the tour bus did not recover from a sideswipe from a much smaller vehicle is a question still to be answered. More has to be learned about the tour bus driver action before and after being struck by the SUV. Regardless of whether one or both drivers contributed to this New York City bus accident, the at fault party or parties will be responsible for the injuries suffered by the passengers. Recovery in this kind of case would include pain and suffering for injuries, reimbursement of unpaid medical expenses, lost wages, and more.
