Cement Truck Accident in New York City Sends a Woman and Two Children to the Hospital

On Behalf of | Jan 6, 2016 | Pedestrian Accidents

Two young children and a woman walking down a street are recovering after being hit by a cement truck last month. The commercial truck accident in New York happened on 55th Avenue in the Elmhurst neighborhood around 2:30 PM on Wednesday December 23rd. This, eyewitnesses say, is a neighborhood where trucks are often driving above the posted limit and turning corners too quickly. State Sen. Jose Peralta and Councilwoman Julissa Ferreras-Copeland jointly condemned the accident and called for increased traffic safety measures to make New York City streets safer for pedestrians.

While the exact condition of the victims is unknown, eyewitnesses say that the severity of their injuries was shocking. One individual said there was blood everywhere. An unconfirmed preliminary statement issued by the NYPD said that at least one of the victims was being treated for a severed leg.

Police reports show that the woman and children were struck by a cement truck operated by Corona Transit Mix. The company denied knowledge of an accident and refused to issue a statement to reporters at the scene.

This was the second commercial truck accident in New York City in as many weeks. These large vehicles pose a hazard to motorists and pedestrians alike. Decreased line of sight and increased turning radiuses are chief causes of truck accidents in New York, especially if the driver is inexperienced or unskilled.

Because these vehicles are so big and powerful, pedestrians accidents result in severe injuries and sometimes death. Those accident victims who survive are often faced with years of recovery and rehabilitation. The responsible driver and vehicle owner would be liable for the victim’s pain and suffering, past and future lost wages and unpaid medical and hospital bills.
