School Bus Accident in Brooklyn Sends Students to the Hospital

On Behalf of | Feb 2, 2016 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

A frightening school bus accident in Brooklyn last month sent seven people to the hospital with various injuries. The injured individuals included at least four children and three adults. All are expected to make full recoveries though one child was injured more severely than the rest.

This particular school bus accident in Brooklyn occurred at roughly 3 PM while the mini bus was making a left turn onto 1st Street in the Park Slope neighborhood. Surveillance camera video shows the bus pulling alongside a white truck before proceeding with the turn from 4th Avenue. Halfway through the intersection the bus was struck by a blue Ford Mustang travelling along 4th Avenue. The “broadside” strike tipped the bus on its side, tossing several of the passengers about inside the cabin.

Residents of the area say the intersection is a danger zone that needs to be fixed. Cars travel over the posted speed limit creating what one person dubbed a “backwater highway.” Several individuals have complained to the City and there have been multiple requests for action via the City’s Vision Zero website. This latest crash was the third at that same intersection within 5 weeks.

While school bus accidents in New York City are rare, they often result in injuries. Sadly, children under the age of 17 are in one of the highest risk brackets for automobile related injuries. That’s something no parent wants to think about. When you put your child on the bus you assume that they will arrive at school unharmed but accidents do occur. Their fate is literally in the hands of the bus driver and the other drivers who share the street.

If your child has been injured in a bus crash-regardless of whether the fault lies with the bus driver or the operator of another automobile-your child could be entitled to compensation for their injuries.
