The Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY) gathered the latest available information from the period between 2010 and 2014 and correlated the number of construction accidents in New York with various other factors to understand how, why, and where these devastating catastrophes are happening. This effort was, in part, a response to the dramatic increase in construction accident in New York City in recent years-up 53 percent just last year by some accounts.
Their analysis shows that 80 percent of all construction accidents in New York City occur at job sites where the buildings are ten stories or smaller. These smaller sites are also where over half of the fatal construction accidents in New York occur.
Indeed, the problems at these smaller job sites may be a side effect of their size. The researchers concluded that these small sites are often overseen by smaller construction companies who hire inexperienced workers. In addition, there are rarely dedicated safety personnel at these smaller sites-a factor that can create dangerous working conditions. This hazardous combination leads to job sites where safety precautions are not only unknown and overlooked but may be purposefully ignored.
