Crosswalk Accident in Manhattan Claims Life of Elderly New Yorker

An avoidable crosswalk accident in New York City claimed the life of 67-year-old Yuenei Wu on June 6th. Wu was crossing the street at the intersection of Eighth Avenue and 38th Street in Midtown Manhattan when the driver of a livery vehicle failed to yield the right of way. The SUV began a left turn and struck the woman. She was knocked to the ground and pinned underneath the vehicle.

Eye witnesses to the crash say the driver paused but began driving away after the collision. Several individuals began yelling at him to stop. a handful of onlookers actually lifted the vehicle off of her. EMS arrived at the scene. Wu passed away from the extent of her injuries. This is the second fatal crosswalk accident in Manhattan this year.

NYPD arrived on scene and charged the driver of the Suburban with failing to yield to a pedestrian. The failure to yield charge carries a maximum penalty of a $250 fine and/or 30 days in jail.

Many critics say that this seemingly minor penalty is far too small. While failure to yield accidents in New York City involving two automobiles often end with just minor damage to the vehicles, failure to yield accidents involving pedestrians can lead to horrific, life-altering injuries and even death. In fact, failure to yield is one of the most commonly cited driving violations in fatal bicycle and pedestrian accidents in New York City.

Victims and surviving family members of those involved in crosswalk accidents in New York can seek monetary compensation from the at fault drivers. These financial settlements and awards are for pain and suffering, unpaid medical bills and lost income related to the prolonged suffering and disability.
