Bicycle Accident in the Bronx Kills Man Riding on Broadway

On Behalf of | Nov 29, 2016 | Bicycle Accidents

A fatal afternoon bicycle accident in The Bronx claimed the life of a man riding properly in the travel lane. At roughly 12 noon, 59-year-old Jing Yin Jiang was riding his bike northbound on Broadway near West 89th Street when he was struck from behind by a box truck. Eyewitness reports show that the truck had swerved into the bicyclist’s path and struck the victim, him, tossing him to the ground.

When EMTs arrived on the scene of the tragic bicycle accident in New York the victim was already unconscious and unresponsive. They rushed him to nearby Mount Sinai West Hospital. Jing Yin Jiang passed away shortly after being admitted.

While the driver of the truck remained on the scene of this fatal bicycle accident in the Bronx and was not immediately arrested or ticketed, the NYPD are actively investigating the crash. While he may not face criminal charges, it’s clear that driver’s actions directly contributed to Mr. Jiang’s untimely death. Regardless of the criminal charges, the owner of the trucker, the 30-year-old truck driver and his employer (if he was on the job at the time of the accident) could be facing a civil action filed on behalf of the victim’s surviving relatives. The lawsuit would be brought by Mr. Jiang’s dependents for loss of financial support and funeral expenses.

This year has been even deadlier for cyclists in the city than last-a total of 17 fatal bicycle accidents in New York-with more than month still to go in 2016. This figure is a gruesome reminder that everything the city has done to decrease the number of traffic fatalities (adding slow zones and miles of dedicated bike lanes) hasn’t yet had an appreciative effect on bicycle deaths.
