Two young girls were walking to school early on the morning of October 14th in Ozone Park when they were struck by a Chevy operated by an unnamed 55-year old driver. The girls were just a few hundred feet from their high school when the terrifying pedestrian accident in Queens occurred. The two teenagers were crossing the street near the intersection of Cross Bay Boulevard and 149th Avenue when the oncoming car crashed into them both.
One of the girls, identified as Jazmine Marin, suffered severe head trauma when the front of the car struck her. The other unnamed victim suffered a leg injury. EMTs arrived immediately and rushed both victims to nearby Jamaica Medical Center. Jazmine’s injuries were too severe. She passed away at the hospital. The other victim of this senseless pedestrian accident in Queens was listed in stable condition.
The driver of the automobile stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the NYPD investigation and it is unlikely that he will be facing criminal charges. However, it is still likely that a New York pedestrian accident lawsuit will be instituted on behalf of the injured pedestrian as well as a death action on behalf of the deceased pedestrian.
A local tow truck driver told reporters that since the strip mall opened across the street there have been multiple accidents and near-accidents in the vicinity of this intersection.
Local safety advocates are pushing to make the intersection safer in an effort to avoid any further deadly pedestrian accidents in New York’s Ozone Park neighborhood. Suggestions range from improved signage at the crosswalk to increased numbers of crossing guards during the school day to make sure children get home safe.
If you or a loved one has been injured by a careless driver while crossing the street, you could be entitled to financial compensation for your injuries, lost time from work and unpaid medical expenses.
