New York Truck Driver Charged in School Bus Accident

A late December school bus accident involving a New York City truck driver has resulted in criminal charges. 57-year old Benjamin Bramble was operating an 18-wheel U.S. Xpress tractor-trailer which caused a multi-car pile-up involving a school bus on December 20th. The police from Morgan County are charging the truck driver with failure to maintain control of his vehicle, even though, thankfully the New York City truck accident ended with all the children healthy and whole.

However, three men in a pick-up truck involved in the crash were not so lucky. The men were all transported to a nearby hospital with unspecified injuries.

Evidence and eyewitness accounts show the New York City truck accident was caused when Bramble failed to bring his truck to a stop in time-in fact photos show over 100-feet of skid marks left when the trucks wheels locked up from braking hard. The trailer truck smashed into the rear of the pickup (which had stopped for the bus to unload children) and drove the smaller vehicle off the road.

While the stretch of roadway has a history of school bus accidents, it appears that Bramble’s inaction was the cause for the crash.

In addition to the criminal charges stemming from this New York City truck accident, Bramble could be held financially liable for the injuries suffered by the three victims travelling in the pick-up truck. These accident victims may recover for their pain and suffering along with lost time out of work. Also, under New York’s no-fault law, the three men in the pick-up truck will be able to obtain medical benefits from the insurance company for the pick-up truck which is the vehicle they occupied at the time of the accident. In addition, coverage of $2,000 per month is available for their lost time from work.
